What the compression settings do
Light, Medium, and Heavy presets use progressively lower image resolution and JPEG quality. Custom target mode tries progressively stronger settings and selects the mildest setting that reaches your target, when that is possible. The target applies to the whole PDF, not to each page.
What changes-and what is checked
The compressor can recompress supported embedded images, deflate eligible streams, remove unreachable objects, and optionally remove page thumbnails and document metadata. It does not rewrite page text or fonts. Before a result is offered, the tool compares the page count, page dimensions, extracted text, and annotation counts with the original; if verification fails, the original is kept.
Check the result before sharing
Compression may reduce the clarity of photos or scanned pages. Compare the first page preview, inspect other pages in the downloaded PDF, and confirm that the file meets the receiving service's size and readability requirements. A requested size is not guaranteed: when the PDF contains little compressible image data, the tool reports that the target could not be reached or leaves the original unchanged.
Files and privacy
PDFs are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server by this tool. You can add up to 10 files in one batch. If a PDF is password-protected, the tool may ask for its password; the compressed copy will not retain password protection or editing restrictions. Keep the original if you need to preserve those protections.
PDF compression questions
How does this PDF compressor reduce file size?
It recompresses supported embedded images, deflates eligible uncompressed streams, removes unreachable objects, and can remove page thumbnails and document metadata. Text content and fonts are not rewritten by the compression engine.
Which compression settings can I choose?
Choose Light (200 DPI and JPEG quality 80%), Medium (150 DPI and 65%), or Heavy (96 DPI and 50%). You can also enter a custom KB or MB target. Target mode tries progressively stronger settings and uses the gentlest one that reaches the target when possible.
Will the PDF always reach my target size?
No. The result depends on what is inside the PDF and which images can be recompressed. If the target cannot be reached while keeping text unchanged, the tool reports the smallest result it could make rather than promising the requested size.
Does compression change or remove text and pages?
The compressor does not rewrite page text or fonts. Before offering a compressed file, it checks that page count, page dimensions, extracted text, and annotation counts match the original. If a check fails, it keeps the original instead. Always review the output for your own document needs.
Are my PDF files uploaded?
The selected PDFs are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server by this tool. Processing time depends on the PDF and your device.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
The tool can ask for the PDF password when it is needed to open the document. The downloaded compressed copy will not retain password protection or editing restrictions. Do not use this tool if you need those protections to remain in place.
Why might the file barely get smaller?
A PDF with few compressible images, already-compressed images, or much of its size in fonts or attachments may have little room to shrink. The tool may show an explanation and keep the original when compression does not make it smaller.
Can I compress more than one PDF?
Yes. You can add up to 10 PDF files, process them with the same settings, download individual results, or download multiple completed results together as a ZIP file.
